Ride a pirogue for an amazing and timeless adventure into Africa’s most famous river. Gaze at monstrous Kinshasa and the countless ships, villages, and local fishermen as you go further up toward the islands and villages north of the river towns. See farmers tilling the riverside and going about their daily lives. See the DRC’s nearby river villages and markets, and communities on the enormous island in the river north of the Congo Pool.

KNOW MORE ABOUT THE CONGO RIVER BEFORE YOU VISIT:

The Congo River is Africa’s most powerful river, the second most voluminous river in the world, the fifth-longest, and the deepest. It even passes through the second-largest rainforest in the world. However, facts don’t do this magnificent watery giant justice and visitors will only be able to marvel at its sheer size and the surrounding impenetrable jungle, the very place that inspired Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.

Start your Congo River adventure with a traditional pirogue or a modern boat. Many villages, both tiny and sprawling, pop up along the river and offer an intriguing insight into their fascinating culture. The river widens into a lake-like and tranquil expanse at Pool Malebo, while the Livingstone Falls showcases the river in all its rushing fury. Experience the different sights and sounds of real Africa as you travel through a land so few travelers have yet discovered.

The boat is further equipped with safety equipment, sanitary installation, a generator, lighting, and freezers. It is operated by a licensed and experienced captain, a mechanic, and a sailor. A cook and a tourist guide are present throughout (depending on your tour package). Evenings and nights are spent ashore, enabling cultural exchanges with the local population.

The river splits the DRC and the Republic of Congo’s capital cities, Kinshasa and Brazzaville, making these two hubs excellent entry points to your Congo River experience. A total of eight natural sites in the Congo River basin are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List making the area one of the most important centers of natural heritage in the world.

There are several restaurants and hotels from which one can get a great view of the Congo River, particularly looking from Brazzaville over to Kinshasa. Ironically there is no bridge across to connect these two big capital cities. One can watch local fishermen at work. There is a majestic bridge across the Djoue River very near where this tributary empties into the Congo. The bridge should be seen both in the day and when it is lighted at night. To the east of the city, the river divides and meanders through small islands, but just to the west, one finds rocky rapids, giving the Congo both a peaceful and somewhat dangerous character.

This would be an incredible journey through one of the world’s least explored areas – for you, this is the very essence of adventure, and you will be happy for this iconic trip always. Always follow your travel guide rule and be in a group during your Congo River Adventure tour. Have a happy and safe journey!!
